Is it all about the windows? Residents' values in residential heritage buildings

Reducing energy and associated carbon emissions from the built environment is fundamental to meeting our climate goals. Retrofit of existing buildings therefore a key strategy. Heritage present particular challenges for retrofitting because their traditional construction need retain historic values. Replacing windows often critical element low retrofit, but heritage this can be problematic.This paper explores values that residents invest in windows, opportunities fenestration. Qualitative data 16 case studies county Cumbria, UK, examined gain greater understanding residents’ views, which are neglected policy approaches. Findings show residents, both designated undesignated buildings, value original appreciate thermal benefits features such as shutters or curtains. Residents generally considered complete window replacement unacceptable were more positive about options secondary glazing internal shutters. Challenges, including costs finding skilled tradespeople produce undertake restoration identified. The concludes with implications these findings fenestration reduction.
